Internal audits

How to plan the internal audit programme by clause, record audits and findings, and raise a nonconformity from a finding.

Screen: Internal audits Clause 8.8 Updated

The internal audits screen holds your audit programme and the record of each audit. See Clause 8.8 for what the standard asks.

The calendar view

A year view shows planned and performed audits against the clauses of ISO/IEC 17025:2017. If any clause has not been audited within the audit interval set by your rule pack, normally 12 months, a gap warning names it. This is the quickest way to answer the assessor’s question “show me that your programme covers the whole standard”.

There is also a list view of every audit.

An audit

Field What to enter
Title For example “Equipment and traceability, Q1”.
Clauses covered One or more clause numbers, for example 6.4 and 6.5.
Planned on Date. Required.
Performed on Date the audit took place.
Auditor Who audited. Where you can, someone independent of the work audited.
Auditees Who was audited.
Status Planned, In progress, Reported, Closed or Cancelled.
Summary A short statement of the result.

Upload the audit report to the audit record.

Findings

Each audit has a findings table:

Field What to enter
Clause The clause the finding is raised against.
Severity Observation, Minor, Major or Opportunity for improvement.
Description What was found, with objective evidence.

Raise NCR on a finding creates a nonconformity with the source set to internal audit and linked back to the finding. See Nonconformities.

Due dates

A planned audit appears in the dashboard due list on its planned date and becomes overdue if the date passes without a performed date.

First week

Enter this cycle’s programme as planned audits, with clauses covered, so the calendar shows coverage straight away. Then enter audits already done this cycle with their findings. The free internal audit calendar workbook uses the same fields, so a programme kept there transfers directly.

What the assessor looks for

A programme that covers every requirement over the cycle with frequency based on importance and past results, auditors who did not audit their own work, reports, and findings followed through to closed NCRs. All of it goes into the assessor pack.
